Purpose and Career Goal
If you find yourself here, you are attempting to learn about Ms. Burriss as an educator. Explore this compilation of creative work samples as well as credentialing data.
Some people will discover that they are great at what they do and others will discover that they are great at teaching others how to do something. I discovered that I am a person that can reach the minds of people and help them learn. I aspire to influence children in a community of high need for education reform. I am not seeking a comfortable place to teach by a script, but rather a place that will demand use of my background to overcome and inspire students to learn.

Education Philosophy
- Every student can learn
- Learning must be progressive (Piaget’s schema)
- Learning is unique to each individual (Gardners’ multiple intelligences)
- Students must learn and perform what they learned (Gradual Release of Responsibility model based on Lev Vygotsky’s research and coined by Gallagher and Pearson)
Schools should be organized around the students’ attributes and needs. Structure should be the foundation to establish a comfortable and predictable learning environment for student.
School topics should begin with the mechanisms of learning and assessment: reading, writing, music, verbal communication skills. Then learning can begin on other vital topics such as math, social studies, science, physical education, humanities and vocational arts. A range of topics should be included at different doses to ensure exposure and therefore success of each individual student. Students will learn at different paces and therefore the time spent on each topic should be dependent on the student needs.

Universal Teaching Perspective
WHERE DOES THE UNITED STATES STAND IN CONTEXT TO THE WORLD?
Using the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) reports we can observe our performance in comparison to 65 other countries and economies in Math, Reading and Science. If we wish to continue to live the quality of life our economy allows, we need to be concerned with the performance of our future leaders world-wide.
We have significant advantages compared to the rest of the world, but are performing poorly in comparison.
*Advantages of the United States:
The U.S. has more wealth to disperse in comparison to other countries that participated in the PISA exams (5 administered as of 2012).
On average, Austria, Luxembourg, Norway and Switzerland are the only countries that spend more on a student's education than the U.S. The Slovak Republic spends USD 53,000 per student performs the same as the United States. Whereas the United States spends more than USD 115,000 per student. The highest performing participant, Korea, spends well below the average to educate a student.
Better educated parents in the United States should also pose an advantage since this is not common in the other participating countries.
Maybe our students have more disadvantaged backgrounds and this is cause for our lack in efficiency of performance? Not quite, students from the U.S. coming from a disadvantaged background is about the average of students from the other 64 countries and economies.
*Higher complexity in tasks is needed:
As a teacher, this is known through a theory of Benjamin Bloom called "Blooms' Taxonomy". Within the Cognitive Domain there are levels of understanding something and coined by a specific descriptor: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation.
We may teach to this theory and increase the complexity of tasks as students are developmentally prepared, however, we need to incorporate more realistic applications.
